Texas Hold ‘Em: The Psychological Game

It’s the most popular poker game in America (and possibly the world).  It’s the game of choice for most online poker gaming services.  Texas Hold ‘Em has in recent years become the favorite game of countless poker players world-wide.

Bluff, checks, raises, calls, and the thrill of going all in…these are the things that make Texas Hold ‘Em so exciting and popular.  However, these same things also make it one of the most complicated variants of poker ever invented.  The best hold ‘em players aren’t the ones with all the luck, they’re the ones who know how to play the psychological game with their opponents, making them do what they want them to do.  Here are just a few tips for how to exploit this side of the game:

Tip #1: Play the hand you don’t have.

One of the simplest ways to bluff is to play as though your hand is vastly better or worse than it is.  If, for example, you were dealt a very good hand, sometimes it’s best to check once or twice, maybe hesitate on your bet, fidget in your seat, and then at the end raise once or twice, driving the pot up and dropping out some of the less confident players.

Likewise, the classic bluff can sometimes be effective.  Sometimes, when you actually have bad cards, play with a slight air of confidence (as though you have a good hand).

Tip #2: Play the hand you do have.

One of the keys to successful bluffing is to never do the same thing enough times that people start to catch on to it.  So, sometimes it pays to change things up by playing exactly the way the cards fall.  For example, when you get a high hand, and you’ve been playing a lot of bluffs lately, play your hand just as what it is.  Someone at the table will think you’re still bluffing, get confident, and fall right into your trap.

Tip #3: Play the waiting game.

It’s a habit most players have in Texas Hold ‘Em to bet on any hand that shows the slightest potential.  This is not very wise and leads to an empty wallet very quickly.  The wisest thing to do is to just pass on the bet in hands you don’t have high cards.  This practice more or less insures that you won’t lose all your cash in the first hour.

Tip #4: Once in a while, you have to be holding all the cards.

Sure it’s hokey, and yes it came from a movie, but it’s the truth.  Part of the key to making a convincing bluff is to win well once in a while.  Once in a while someone has to get the nerve to call you on a bluff and it has to be a false bluff.  This discourages people from going out on a limb thinking you’re bluffing.

So, next time you play hold ‘em, remember that the game isn’t all about the cards and the odds.  Knowing those things helps a lot, but hold ‘em is an art.  It’s a delicate game of baiting and bluffing…and that’s the fun of it all.
