Monkey Poker

When it comes to poker, many people are of the opinion that it is not a game of chance at all, and therefore should not be subject to the same legislation that the rest of the gambling world must abide by. It is very true that poker is unique in that players can have strategy and can improve their skill over time, which is something that cannot be done in a game of only chance. Still, many amateur poker players, who do not know all the rules and strategies, still have the impulse to second guess their actions, and try to compensate for a wrong move by trying to learn from their past mistakes, and adjust for their future choices.

What is most interesting is that researchers have just found that monkeys have that similar reaction when faced with options that come with rewards. The experiment showed these monkeys a few different options of colored cards, and then after they made a choice, were shown the different rewards they could have had.

When it comes to poker, players often feel a twinge of regret when they see that they should have made a different choice. For example, even if they know the rules of when to hold’em, sometimes logic is trumped by reality and the outcome doesn’t line up with the rules. That feeling of remorse, followed by the attempt to learn and adjust, is actually an ability shared by monkeys when shown their various options.

This ability is hugely unique and important because it shows that even monkeys can recognize what is actually happening, versus the possibility of what could happen. The next step very well could be a monkey poker league in the next couple of years, with bananas and juice instead of poker chips.
