Poker in Cali California is often viewed as one of the most liberal states, in comparison to the rest of the country which is colored red. While many were surprised this week as the California Supreme Court voted to uphold Proposition 8, the one that bans gay marriage, this week’s news is more in line with what people usually expect out of the Golden State. Online poker fans everywhere can be happy at least, knowing that California is at least considering the legalization of the game. The California Online Poker Law Enforcement Compliance and Consumer Protection Act is currently being drafted to legalize online poker casinos in the state. While the issue has been whether or not it would be legal for the state to pursue online poker within the country, and if it would violate the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, now it looks like CA is moving right along. Using the data and study results from several renowned international research universities, the bill takes into account exactly how much money Californians are spending in online gambling, and examining the benefits of having that revenue be siphoned away to offshore companies. Under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, it is clear that the US is not benefiting at all from the money that Americans are still spending, and are still left to fend for themselves in the unregulated territory. Advocates of the law continue to cite the fact that Californians are able to play the same exact games at a casino but are not allowed to legally play them online in the comfort of their own home. Opponents continue to say that the regulation of online poker will open the door to dangers of identity theft and underage gambling and gambling addiction. Those issues will certainly be addressed in the new bill.
