Poker Martyrdom

Across the country right now the poker debate has been on fire and ongoing strongly. In several states now the issue has come up over the definition of gambling, the definition of poker, and whether or not it qualifies enough to be held up to the same standards as the rest of the gambling world. Many poker players have been slapped with fines for taking part in illegal gambling, but the law doesn’t actually state that it qualifies, and as it is, several state courts have already ruled that poker is in fact a game of skill not chance.

Many view themselves almost as martyrs or people taking one for the team so that poker players of the future will have a chance to play freely without worrying that they are breaking the law by simply playing a card game that requires year’s worth of knowledge.

This has been the goal of the PPA for the past several years now, and most recently they’ve had even the nation’s most educated experts come to the same conclusion. Moreover those experts have extended themselves and their reputation to vouch for the non-chance status of poker as a pastime. One statistics expert even took the stand and was able to say with much certainty just how much poker winnings have to do with the ability of the player and how much of it rests on the strength of the hand.

Also many players want to be found guilty so that they have the opportunity to appeal the decision and keep pushing the topic up the chain of power within this country. While they do have to pay fines since they are found guilty, many convicted poker players agree that it is a worthy cause and a small price to pay for the future of poker legalization.
