Washington Ruling The State of Washington has decided to uphold their current law that says that all online poker and casino gambling websites are illegal. Lee Rousso, who is a lawyer and a member of the Poker Players Alliance, made an appeal to the courts in Washington state way back in 2007, and only now has gotten a decision in the legal battle. After all of the hard work, arguing, and waiting, citizens of the state of Washington are still going to be convicted of a felony if they should go online and find themselves playing internet poker. It is not enough for people to be convicted of a more minor crime, but the state of Washington has maintained their stance against online poker. Rousso made his case for the courts and had been working on getting the law overturned for a very long time. Not only is the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act difficult to enforce, but it also is severely flawed in several other ways. Despite Rousso making his best case and arguments and feeling like he had the court on his side, it is difficult to get a law overturned by just a hearing. He even used the Commerce Clause which traditionally was made to protect the interest of interstate commerce. Still, Washington state maintained that their interest in making online poker illegal trumped any other importance. That is dangerous territory since it looks like the state is treating its laws like they are a separate country, and don’t have the interest of the country at heart.
