State Ruling The latest state to overstep its boundaries is Minnesota, as the state’s department of Public Safety has just assumed the right to decide federal law. The state of Minnesota is arguing that the current law about online poker casino gambling in the United States is not just a ban on the financial transaction, it is a ban on the entire online gambling industry at large. Usually it is the job of the judiciary branch to interpret the law, but it looks like the department of public safety has just taken the matter in to their own hands and is trying to control what activities and websites Minnesota residents are allowed to access. The state issued a whole list of over 200 websites that they would be deeming unsuitable, and many critics of this move have cited that many of the online poker casinos on the list do not even have any business going on in the United States in the first place, raising the question of whether the measure is just meant as a scare tactic or threat, or if it is a serious and valid precedent for the future of online casinos in the country. Either way, it is clear that the online poker and gambling casino issue is larger than just an individual’s want to partake in betting activity. Instead, it has just brought to a head the larger debate and controversy that surrounds individual rights, state and federal legislation, international commerce, and the process by which laws are made and executed in this country. The fact that it has taken a vague ban on online poker to bring these issues to a head is interesting enough, since it is an issue that is not as serious as life or death, but it is still a hot button topic for many on either side of the picket fence.
