Fight Over Domain In addition to Minnesota, a few other states are taking part in the attack on online poker and casino website domain names. Domain names are so important because they are so directly related to the identity of a brand, and the ability to run daily business operations. If people do not know the website URL to which they need to visit in order to access a company that is solely located online, then they have no way to logon. If a domain name is changed without notice, the brand is weakened by the inconsistency, and money is lost by the company. Still, while a domain is certainly integral to the survival of a business, it is not the business itself. That is what the government of Kentucky is saying. They are saying that because online poker casino gambling is illegal in the United States, they have a right to sieze ownership of those online casinos that are still participating in the American market because they are defining the actual domain name as a gambling device. Of course it is obvious that online poker and gambling casino websites are upset about this development, but it truly raises a global issue about freedom of speech and the role in the United States that the government is allowed to take in the daily lives of its citizens and businesses. Traditionally the United States has strongly held onto the belief that the government should take a backseat to individuals rights. However the seizure of online poker casino domain names is a blatant departure from this stance, and many are up in arms over it going on unnoticed.
