Domain Defense In the wake of many blatant violations of the American doctrine of governmental and individual freedoms, the cause of online poker and gambling casino websites has been brought to the forefront of everybody’s minds. Even people who are not necessarily in favor of legalizing online casino gambling are still upset over the latest unlawful seizure of internet domain names by a few different states. While online poker casinos are definitely the ones most directly affected by the seizures, it is certain that other industries will likely follow, and meet the same opposition and illegal threats. And once a state starts deciding what material its citizens are cleared to view and what activities its citizens are cleared to participate in, what’s to say that more invasive censorship is not just around the corner? Furthermore, the fact that the states have tried to proceed with such a rash action without any hearings or due process, on the basis that materials are just assumed unlawful is by definition un-American, and unconstitutional. Were the courts to uphold the decision made by Kentucky and Minnesotan legislators, the foundation of the freedoms that United States citizens hold so dear would most certainly be threatened. Furthermore, the precedent would extend to other governments around the world, which would now have the freedom to assign validity of material of a domain, based on its own judgement of whether the material adheres to the local law. Such a decision could have the power to take away all freedoms of speech and the voice of the general public around the world. The seizure of the domain names would be in direct conflict with what sites like Facebook and Twitter are already demonstrating: that the individual voice is as valid as the group, and that every voice deserves to be heard, at least until Facebook and Twitter’s domains are seized by somebody else.
