WPT Online Closes The WPT is closing its online doors to their online poker casino, which never could catch a break, since its beginning in 2006. The World Poker Tour, or WPT, has always been a force to be reckoned with, even since the beginning of the poker boom in 2006. The popularity of the WPT was actually what brought about the whole boom in the first place, especially with the younger generation in the United States. Because of the sudden increased interest, other brands were getting some great business, and also it was paving the way for success from newer online poker casinos like Full Tilt, who managed to strike while the iron was hot, and took advantage of that whole wave. Given all the interest that was out there, it looked like there could be no shortage of online poker casinos, and WPT made the seemingly wise choice to jump in with their own brand. Unfortunately, by the time they got in the game, players already had so much to choose from, and it was already around the time that President Bush passed the UIGEA. Because the WPT is an American based brand, the UIGEA managed to not only eliminate the ability of the company to supply to its customers, but also eradicated the involvement of the brand in the rest of the world. The timing was all wrong with the entire thing, as it were, it looks like the Fates had something else in store for the WPT online poker brand. Before it was an online casino, the WPT had support from several big online poker companies all over the world. But as soon as they decided to cross that line and instead become competition, all the sponsorships left and the world involvement shriveled to only North American supporters. All of these chips were always stacked against them, and so the news that they are closing is really not surprising anybody. Back to January 2009 Archive. |
