South Carolina Poker BattleIn another story about at home poker games, seemingly the most quintessential and benign man pastime of the 20 and 21st centuries, a South Carolina man named Bob Chimento has found himself in some hot water over his own guy’s night in. After thirty years of getting together with no problems, Chimento and his guys found that they were busted by a swarm of police officers, since apparently they were in direct violation of a 300 year old law that is still in place in South Carolina, which outlaws any gambling in the state. What is even more infuriating is that many of those who were present actually admitted their guilt and paid the hefty $250 fine each. Chimento and four of his friends however saw the whole thing differently, and since 2006 have been fighting for the state to review the two hundred year old law. Again, poker is such a prevalent part of American culture now- it is a common pastime in living rooms everywhere, it is constantly written into tv shows, games are broadcast in high definition all over ESPN, and even the President of our country is a huge fan. It makes absolutely no sense for people to be going to jail for playing poker. Furthermore, don’t police have better things to do these days than busting a group of middle class guys trying to have fun when their wives are out of town? A South Carolina court finally decided, much to the approval of Chimento and all the PPA members across the country, that poker is in fact a game of skill. This is merely another win for poker lovers everywhere. Back to January 2009 Archive. |
