A Look Back at 08 For anybody who thought that the passing of the UIGEA in 2006 would single the end of online poker, 2008 has been quite a huge surprise. Online poker has actually come back with a vengeance last year, and this coming year looks like it will merely be following suit. Online poker casinos everywhere were seeing nonstop sign ups and huge success, well, except for maybe WPT Online, which after trying so hard to make good, never ended up catching a break, and finally announced its closure last month. In one of the most interesting stories, famous Full Tilt Poker Pro Phil Ivey has retained his stature as one of the most intimidating and successful online poker players out there. A relatively unknown player decided to challenge him to a game of Hold’Em and won, but then very unwisely decided to challenge him again. Of course he lost, as he should have, for anybody who gets that cocky deserves to be shot down. Immediately. 2008 was also the year that online poker got the most media attention in a long time. After a couple years of getting a bad rap and supporting the prohibition of the market it the US, 60 Minutes ran a report on the cheating scandals that plagued Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker a couple of years ago. Many independent studies were done, and all of them pointed to the legalization and regulation of the industry for the US. Full Tilt Poker continued to reign on the front of high stakes players, attracting some of the biggest names in the online poker industry. Poker Stars hosted the world’s biggest online tournament with almost 40,000 players, which is something that has never been done before. Tom Dwan and David Benyamine had an exceptionally great year in 08, as both of them excelled in online poker, as well as played in some of the biggest tournaments in the world. Benyamine happens to favor Pot-Limit Omaha, which won him over $6 million in that last year alone. Furthermore, he was the winner at the WSOP and found love in Full Tilt Pro Erica Schoenberg.
