Massachusetts Battle Ground The fight for online poker rages on across the country this month as our attention turns to Massachusetts. For the past couple of years Gov. Deval Patrick has tried to push through a bill that would expand the reaches of land casinos in the state, but up until now has had language in it that would deem online poker and casinos illegal. Not only that, but the punishment proposed for the activity is astronomical and excessive. For the past two years a version of the same bill has gone though and gotten rejected and this time it is specifically that passage about online poker that has people up in arms. Never have US online poker players been so close to legalization, now that several states across the country have decided to make online poker a game of skill. What that means is that any legislation that would make online gambling illegal would not affect online poker since poker would not be a game of chance. The latest spotlight is on another group headed by a Harvard Law professor, who has argued that poker is so important and relevant and should be given protection and legalized. In a very interesting point of view, Professor Charles Nesson has defended poker by saying it is basically a microcosm of real life, and is a valuable teaching tool that can show people in all walks of life the complexities of the economy, finance, business and other real life skills. In response to the pressure from the Poker Players Alliance, in conjunction with the support from universities across the country, and the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society, Representative Wallace has decided to take out the passage that would make online poker illegal. Perhaps with those changes the law might actually go through. Back to February 2009 Archive. |
