Swing Vote In this current election year, the regulation and legalization of online poker is a major deciding factor in many citizen’s plans to vote. Although many poker players are and have always voted Republican, it is clear that they are passionate enough about the cause to vote for the opposition merely based on this one issue. Since the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) was passed in 2006, the US has driven all online gaming to offshore sites, and has lost all control. With that, they have also allowed other countries to benefit from this multibillion dollar industry, with the US not seeing one cent from tax and business revenue. The States has, in effect, lost the opportunity to cash in on this international industry that does not have any signs of going anywhere in the near or far future. Major poker players, including World Series of Poker (WSOP) winners John Pappas and Greg Raymer, have been banding together and calling for a change in policy. With the organizational protection of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), players have made their voices heard. They think that poker should not be classified as gambling at all, but rather, as a game of skill, which has been an argument that has been heard for years. They think it preposterous that so many forms of gambling, from slot machines, to roulette, to lotto, to horse betting, is allowed and regulated in the States, and yet online poker, which takes much more skill, is not only banned, but severely prosecuted. In the current election year, with so many Republicans (McCain included) against online gambling, poker players are voicing their frustration, even on the Republican website, and are ready to cross party lines if they are not heard.
