Grim Outlook for Sweden Sweden’s poker and online casino monopoly Svenska Spel is making headlines once again. While it has been in place for a few years now and has claimed to be doing well, its most recent quarterly report has revealed some dismal numbers. Perhaps in an international economy where discretionary income is shrinking as we speak, maybe even Swedish citizens are tightening their wallets. While the organization’s purpose is to keep tabs on people’s gambling activity, and not allow any players to access outside and potentially unsafe online casinos, it seems that some Swedes are finding ways around the regulations. As with any rule or ban, people will always find ways of getting by, but the trick is not to get caught. Online poker has been offered by Svenska Spel since 2005, but since players are required to set time limits on their own playing (the organization’s way of controlling the chance of developing addictive habits), players might be looking elsewhere for a more fun and fancy free experience. The income from poker and online casino games has been a definite help for the country (proceeds benefit various programs, from education to sports), although most recently, it seems that the financial situation and the outside competition has taken a bite out of the profits. In a socialist government where people pay so much money in taxes, a chance to make some more money at a game is certainly very welcome. However, for now it looks like people might be tired of the system’s downfalls and either ready for change in the infrastructure, or ready for the financially difficult times to pass. Looks like this week’s poker action will have to be at the neighbor’s house.
