Poker is a Skill Game Ever since the beginning of poker, the huge debate between poker players and the general public has been the nature of the game. Players insist that the game involves skill, and not luck, and therefore should not be treated as a gambling activity. However, the general public always argues that the game involves losing and winning money, and that the outcome of the cards always dictates how a player fares in a game. In reality, it’s probably a combination of both, with players basing their decisions and moves on previous knowledge about poker, as they get their various hands. The debate has gone on without much consequence, that is, until now. The nature of the game now has a bearing on legislation, and how the game is regulated. As of right now poker is included in the current US law on internet gambling, from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). Since it has been classified as a gambling activity poker, is automatically outlawed online. However, the Poker Players Alliance is now crusading for Congress to reclassify poker as a skill game, and therefore exempt it from the UIGEA. Furthermore, the PPA is hoping to lay the groundwork for American acceptance and regulation of online poker, so that players will have a safe and legal way to play their favorite game at home, a right, they say, they should have regardless of the current political landscape. They are looking to introduce a bill to Congress that would do just that, from legalization, to regulation and licensing. Opposition of course, fears that a move like that would open the door to the legalization of online gambling in general. Back to August 2008 Archive. |
