Another Reason to Say Yes

While there may be thousands of poker players across the nation all clamoring for their game to be legalized in the United States, it seems that it does not matter what pros and cons those people might present, if the legislation is dead set against the legalization of online poker. However, whenever you add academia into the mix, it lends some credibility to the cause, and makes people stop and listen.

That’s what is going on in the world of online poker this week, as researchers from the University of Western Ontario professor June Cotte is making a case for the legalization of the game. This is a huge victory for players all over the country, who this year have been banding together in record numbers to ensure that their cause is heard this election year. Lifelong Republican poker players are even threatening to vote Democrat if their party does not decide to advocate for their side.

The study, on which Cotte collaborated with  University of Nevada professor Kathryn Latour, involved surveys and interviews of thirty poker players, 20 of whom were frequent  land casino players and 10 who preferred online poker.

Their findings reflected an emotional disconnect between the online player versus the land casino player. It seems that the anonymity and coldness of the computer screen removes the urgency and importance of a loss, which enables a player to keep on playing more easily after a loss, than if they had had to physically lose a stack of chips at a poker table.

The professors have concluded that the danger of online poker is a very real thing, as is the danger of the unregulated market the that US legislation Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) has pushed players into. Although technically, any form of online gambling is illegal, many Americans have still been playing at offshore sites, which leaves players open without protection. They recommend the legalization of online poker. Just another reason to say yes to poker.
