The Real World Poker RankingsGiven the popularity of poker games such as Texas Hold’em all over American television and movies, you would think that American poker players would be the number one players in the world. From movies like Rounders and the Oceans series, to having poker tournaments on ESPN around the clock, US citizens have enough exposure to the game to pique their interest, learn about the game, and start a game with their friends. That’s a lot of practicing.Card Player magazine, however, has just released some surprising results. They have a way to track results and data from all major online and land poker games all over the world, and analyze the information so that they can get an accurate snapshot of international skill levels. As it turns out, the US holds the second place spot when it comes to poker skill level. Denmark has officially taken that number one spot. The way that Card Player magazine tabulates the data is based on the frequency of winners from each country, and what kind of stakes they were, at each of the land and online casino tournaments.According to the CEO of Card Player magazine, Jeff Shulman, the world’s poker skill is similar to the spread at this year’s summer Olympics, in which the top tiers of each game have been a pretty even spread. The top contenders in the world of poker are as follows: 1st place goes to Denmark, 2nd to the United States, 3rd to Australia, 4th to Canada, and 5th to Norway. Geographically speaking, the spread of the top five is pretty even, from huge countries to smaller economies. It would be quite interesting for Card Player magazine to track the similarities in those countries that have contributed to the popularity of poker in those areas. Back to August 2008 Archive. |
