More Ammo for D'Amato

Senator Alphonse D’Amato, one of the leading proponents of legalizing online poker and gambling, has just hit politician gold. A huge scandal has broken out involving some American citizens who were playing on foreign online casinos, during which players were “mistakenly” shown their opponents’ cards. Because the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (tries to prohibit Americans from making financial transactions with outside online casino businesses) is an impossibly hard rule to enforce, citizens have decided to play online games anyway. The unfortunate truth that goes with the situation is that there is no safety or regulation since the activity occurred outside the States’ jurisdiction, and therefore the government can provide no recourse or protection to its citizens.

Similar to the alcohol situation that Prohibition caused in the 1920s, the quality of the product and the safety of the market for online poker now is highly questionable and often irregular. Because the government is choosing to turn a blind eye to activity that is here to stay, Senator D’Amato says, citizens are being put in dangerous and compromising situations.

As Chairman of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), Senator D’Amato is a huge supporter of legalization and regulation of online poker, and has been a crusader for their cause for years. As it is now, Americans have convenient internet access to several online gaming websites, including the highly popular Canadian sites, Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet, on which the cheating scandal is centered. Although the companies claim innocence, the Senator is using the situation to illustrate the naïve dangers that the current ban on internet gaming is bringing to American citizens, which the government is supposed to be protecting. We’ll see in November if the Senator’s efforts will be enough to change the next four years.
