A Nation Divided Just to show how divided the country is on how best to deal with the online poker casino industry, there are several instances of groups that have major rifts and factions. Traditionally casino owners have been supportive of any expansion of their industry. Traditionally, conservative right wing citizens have been against any expansion of the gambling industry. Traditionally, the government has supported anything that will bring in extra revenue through taxation. Clearly this is one instance in which people can’t seem to find a common ground, not even in their traditional alliances. Perhaps the most interesting and surprising of these cases would be that of Republican poker supporters. Democratic Representative Barney Frank, who has been championing the cause of poker players everywhere, has just teamed up with conservative Ron Paul, and the head of the Poker Players Alliance, former senator Alfonse D’Amato, who also happens to be Republican. They have formed a team that is fighting for the rights of poker players everywhere, and they have made sure that the interests of both sides of the fence are covered. Traditionally, Republicans are in favor of individual responsibility and freedoms, and the lack of involvement of the government, which is why it’s almost contradictory that they, as a party, should be in opposition to the legalization of online poker casinos. This time they are coming from a more religious or family centric angle, protesting that online casinos pose a larger threat than land casinos because of the closer proximity to every day life. Still, many other Republicans are starting to acknowledge that the lack of regulation simply puts American consumers in danger and leaves them without resources to access in case something goes wrong. Also, the country is missing an opportunity to cash in on money that is currently going to off shore casinos and foreign countries. It seems that the current recession might have something to do with tweaking some opinions about online poker. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
