The Internet Poker Phenomenon

All over the world people are beginning to play poker online, some for free and some for keeps.  They can play with people all across the globe from the comfort of their living room.  All they need is an internet capable computer and a little extra cash to spend, but it brings up the question: “Is this real poker?”  There are several glaring things that make online poker very different from poker played live and in-person.

Really, this is the major concern some avid players have with online poker.  Is it really possible to read someone if you can’t see there face during the game?  A large part of poker is not in the cards, but in the way you play the cards.  This fact alone often prevents the more serious poker players from giving it a shot.

Also, bluffing convincingly is almost impossible to do in internet poker.  Without your opponents seeing the way you act, the way you talk, and all the other signs you put out during a good bluff, the bluff doesn’t convince anyone.

One of the biggest differences in online poker is the fact that new players often play in the same games as the more experienced players, making high-level play almost impossible.  When a newer player calls your every bluff simply because he doesn’t know what a bluff is, the psychological game is realistically not as crucial.

However, there is good to be said for some of these poker gaming services.  Being able to play poker from your own home, even with some differences in how the game is played, is needless to say very convenient.  Most casual players can’t afford going to a casino whenever they want to play poker, and they can also have a hard time finding players in their area.  This makes the world of online poker seem a lot more appealing.  There are times it can be frustrating, but if you play right, internet poker can be very enjoyable.
